WEEKEND URBAN RETREAT WITH DAVID LOY

MADRID, JULY 13 – 14,  2024

What is the connection between personal and social transformation? According to Buddhism, our habitual sense of identity is shadowed by a sense of lack: the feeling that “something is wrong with me” or “I am not good enough.” Why do we never have enough money, fame, sex, erc? We try to fill up our sense of inadequacy with such “lack projects”, but it doesn’t work because they are only symptoms of a more basic problem.  What is that problem?

These obsessions also reveal where our society is stuck. The Buddha’s “three poisons” – gredd,  ill,  will and delusion – have taken on a life of their own: our economic system institutionalizes greed, racism and militarism institutionalize ill will, and […] our collective delusion of separation from the rest of the biosphere is at the heart of the ecological crisis. Any personal awakening we may experience is incomplete without a “social awakening” to these institutionalized causes of suffering.

The ecological crisis, which includes global heating but is much larger than that, is the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. What […] does Buddhism offer that can help us understand and respond appropriately? And what does the ecological crisis mean for the ways we understand and practice Buddhism (or follow any spiritual path) today?

Among other things, we will reflect together on the parallels between our usual individual situation (according to traditional Buddhism) and our current collective situation in relation to the biosphere. What does all this imply about […] the bodhisattva path today? What does it mean to be an “ecosattva”?

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RETREAT

This is an urban retreat, that is, it is not residential. After finishing on Saturday, participants sleep elsewhere return Sunday morning. As an alternative to attending in person, the retreat can also be joined by streaming the Zoom platform.

There will be translation from English to Spanish.

Each participant should bring their own lunch, which can be enjoyed in the center or outdoors in the park adjacent to the center. Optionally, the organization can prepare a light vegetarian lunch bag, as long as it is requested before July 1. The price of the lunch is 10.50 euros.
